Life and Death in an Analytic Group

Pat MacDonald

Westminster Pastoral Foundation Counselling and Psychotherapy in Kensington, London.

After running my training group for a year without major incident, one of the members became seriously ill with cancer and a chaotic period ensued as members developed a warlike approach to one another, to the group and to their therapist. Three individuals departed without notice and it seemed the group would fold as others also threatened to leave. Recovery only came about when it was acknowledged that death had entered the group.

Key Words: cancer • death • group • loss • recovery
