The Group in the Individual

Garry Brownbridge

South West Yorkshire Mental Health NHS Trust, Adult,,Psychological Therapies Service, Pontefract General Infirmary, Friarwood Lane, Pontefract, West Yorkshire WF8 IPL, UK., garry.brownbridge{at}swyt.nhs.uk

A group-analytic perspective is taken on the dynamic interplay of intrapsychic and interpersonal processes in human group interaction. Any strict individual/group juxtaposition is seen as false dichotomy and potential `pseudo-problem'. The interactional context is used to characterize group analysis as a new paradigm in psychoanalytic theory. A concept of the group in the individual is discussed with theoretical and clinical applications.

Key Words: group • group analysis • individual • interpersonal interaction • psychoanalysis
