The Coherency of Group Analysis

Malcolm Pines

Institute of Group Analysis, Tavistock, Maudsley and Cassel Hospitals (UK), Jessica Kingsley Publications in London, Europe and North America, London School of Economics

The coherency of group analysis is both internal and external. Formation of individuated selves is fundamentally a social-historical process (Elias, 1978) affected by caregiver interactions, constituted through language (Bakhtin, 1981: Vygotsky, ref: Wertsch, 1991). Contemporary evolutionary psychology integrates biological and social processes.

Key Words: Bakhtin • dialogue • Elias • Foucault • Foulkes • infant development • Merlin Donald • Vygotsky
