The Self as a Group: The Group as a Self

Malcolm Pines

The Group-analytic Practice, 88 Montagu Mansions, London W1H 1LF, UK.

As `Self ` is constituted through multiple Self-other interactions then we can sustain the concept as `Self as a Group'. It is argued that conversely the concept of Self can be applied to a group under particular conditions, such as a family or in group-analysis.

Key Words: Bakhtin • Elias • Emde • Foulkes • group • intersubjectivity • matrix • person • Self • Vygotsky.
