Countertransference in Adolescent Psychotherapy

Gianni Nagliero

Centro Italiano di Gruppo Analisi, the International Society for Sandplay Therapy

The author considers the special quality of the psychotherapy relationship with adolescents, which involves not only personal transference/countertransference mechanisms, but also collective or archetype aspects. Since these aspects form part of what we can define as the History of Humanity, they are often hard to recognize. It is particularly important for the therapist to analyse counter transference reactions; failure to acknowledge and treat them may lead to a destructive process in the relationship, often the cause of the common phenomenon of interruption of psychotherapy.

Key Words: adolescence • archetype • countertransference • group psychotherapy • setting
