Groups in Israel During the Gulf War

Ben Rippa

Ben Gurion University, Beer Sheva, Israel

Reality's dramatic events sometimes provide the researcher with a natural laboratory in which human processes can be looked at from different perspectives. The Gulf War was one of these events and this paper describes some of the experiences related to Jews and Arabs and their relationships in groups. More specifically, it deals with problems of trust and mistrust between people living in a shared physical space but belonging to different ethnic groups, and the effect of this on issues of national leadership, communication and secrets. I describe the influence of secrets in a small group we were leading at the time, and point out the effects of secrecy on the nation as a whole.
